Superintendent of the Year (AASA)

**2013 nominations due July 30**

The National Superintendent of the Year Program was established in 1988 to recognize outstanding individuals on the frontiers of educational leadership.  Today, there is no more appropriate time to recognize the inspiring leaders who create the systems that prepare students for a successful life.  The program is co-sponsored by Aramark Education and the ING Foundation.

Widely recognized as the highest honor for a school leader, the program is dedicated to the potential and promise of education in a democracy -- that every child deserves to benefit equally from the rich advantages of a quality public education.  School system leaders deserve acclaim and the public's recognition.  By participating in this program, nominees help illuminate the accomplishments of the entire profession.

2012 Pennsylvania Superintendent of the Year

Dr. Patrick O'Toole, Upper St. Clair Twp. SD

Criteria

Each candidate is judged on the following attributes and skills:

  • Leadership for Learning - creativity in successfully meeting the needs of students in his or her school system
  • Communication -- strength in both personal and organizational communication
  • Professionalism - constant improvement of administrative knowledge and skills, while providing professional development opportunities and motivation to others on the education team
  • Community Involvement -- active participation in local community activities and an understanding of regional, national and international issues

Nomination and Application Procedure

The program is open to all public school superintendents in the United States and overseas.

School board members, parents, colleagues and community members may nominate a superintendent.  In addition, superintendents may nominate themselves.

AASA notifies the candidate of the nomination and provides instructions for obtaining and completing the application.  The nominator has a section of the application to complete also.

Selection Process

Once nominated, each candidate is requested to send the completed application packet directly to the PASA office.

State associations of school administrators, including PASA, will each select a State Superintendent of the Year.  The PASA Selection Panel will be appointed by the PASA President and will be comprised of a representative group of active PASA members in leadership or committee positions within the association.  PASA will send to AASA the application materials for the individual selected as Pennsylvania Superintendent of the Year.

A national blue-ribbon panel selects four finalists for AASA National Superintendent of the Year from among eligible State Superintendents of the Year.

Recognition

The National Superintendent of the Year is announced at the second general session of the AASA National Conference on Education in February (Los Angeles in 2013).  All state finalists are recognized during the session.  A $10,000 scholarship is awarded to a student in the high school from which the superintendent graduated.
