Description:  Leadership for Teaching focuses on the role of the administrator in the Standards Aligned System (SAS).  It will be offered in four modules (five full-day sessions) for 75* PIL/Act 48 credit hours.  PIL/Act 48 credit hours are available upon completion of all five-day sessions and embedded activities.  A general overview of the program content follows:

Module 1 – Global Perspectives: Why Standards Aligned System?   This module will provide the participant with an understanding of the instructional strategies and learning materials necessary to provide students with an education that will ensure a competitive edge in a 21st century global economy.  Participants will understand where America stands in the world from an educational standpoint and how the highest achieving nations use a Standards Aligned System.  Participants will understand how to use this information as a springboard for action related to improvement in academic achievement.

Module 2 – Resiliency (two parts)    This module, offered in two sessions, will deal with the intersection and interdependence of academic achievement, resiliency, and formative assessment in a Standards Aligned System.   The module will show participants what research based strategies look like in a Standards Aligned System. Participants will understand how instruction, formative assessment and the resiliency framework are linked at the classroom level.  Participants also will learn about the important role of instructional leaders when building a Standards Aligned System of instruction and the social emotional wellness.  This module will include the use of an electronic observation system for use in teacher observation, growth and data analysis.

Module 3  - Data for Teaching & Learning     This module will focus on the use of data to initiate district, school, and classroom change.   It will address the following aspects of data analysis and use:

  • what the indicators are for student and school success
  • how effective teaching and student achievement relate to one another
  • how to use data to identify good teaching
  • how data teams can use data to improve student and district outcomes
  • how to use data to facilitate the use of Standards Aligned System systems to impact student achievement
  • how to strategically plan for success.

Module 4 – The Role of the Administrator    This module will allow the learner to synthesize all the information from the first three modules in order to lead the introduction, implementation, integration, monitoring and evaluation of a Standards Aligned System that will lead to improved student achievement.  In preparing for the development of a Comprehensive Management Plan (CMP), participants will consider:

  • specific improvements needed in their school district
  • members of their team needed to empower the implementation of the improvements
  • staff members and outside resources/partners important in the implementation of the CMP
  • who is impacted by the implementation of the CMP
  • how to communicate with all stakeholders the importance of embracing and implementing the plan
  • how to budget and provide the necessary resources for the targeted improvements
  • how to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the CMP
