New Superintendents' Academy

REVISED 2020 Academy Schedule
Part 1 - September 22-23*
Part 2 - November 16-17
Part 3 - January 21-22, 2021

NOTE: Although the programs are sequential, participants do NOT have to attend them in order.

NOTE: Should concerns about COVID-19 remain in September, the Academy may be changed to a virtual program. If that occurs, cost will be $49 for members and $69 for nonmembers. Current registrants would receive a refund for the difference.


The three-part New Superintendent Academy is designed to provide practical information and tools to assist the superintendent’s entry into his or her new position.  Each Academy program focuses on an essential leadership standard and provides you with proven strategies for assuring successful first impressions with your school community and beyond. Take advantage of this excellent opportunity to learn from and to network with highly successful educational leaders, as well as with colleagues who, like you, are new to the superintendent’s position. As a bonus, the Academy provides you with the opportunity to gain a statewide perspective from both participants and Academy session leaders representing the diversity of districts across the commonwealth.

Part 1: Strategic and Cultural Leadership. New superintendents will learn strategies for developing and enacting a mission, vision and core values for the academic success and well-being of all students. Facilitated discussions will focus on effectively transitioning to the new role, prioritizing safety, developing a positive relationship with the school board, creating an organizational structure based on the district's needs and priorities, developing an appropriate superintendent evaluation process, and assuring equitable opportunities for all students. (September 22-23) 
Registrants for Part 1 will be able to participate in a free Zoom webinar on July 27: Transitioning to the Superintendency: The First 100 Days
. Great leaders inspire through strategic and cultural leadership.  Dr. Mark DiRocco, PASA Executive Director and a former superintendent, and Connie R. Kindler, PASA Consultant for Professional Development and a former superintendent, will provide guidance about and resources for the critical early actions and strategies that will provide the foundation for the new superintendent’s successful entry into the superintendency.. Details will be sent in advance.


Part 2 - Systems Leadership. New superintendents will gain understanding about the importance of assuring systems and processes for managing and allocating resources transparently, efficiently, effectively and safely to foster equitable access to learning opportunities. (November 16-17)

Part 3 - Professional and Community Leadership.  Inherent in professional and community leadership are effective and ongoing communication, collaboration and empowerment of others inside and outside of the organization in the pursuit of excellence in student learning.  New superintendents will learn strategies that engage all stakeholders. (January 21-22)
