Stay abreast of the rapid advancements in technology that are reshaping the educational landscape! Attend PASA’s Innovative Teaching and Learning Committee "Lunch and Learn" series on Artificial Intelligence (AI). These sessions provide a unique opportunity for leaders to understand how AI can be integrated into curriculum development, personalized learning, and administrative efficiency, ensuring that their institutions remain at the forefront of educational innovation and avoid legal issues. By engaging with experts and peers over lunch, leaders can learn about practical applications of AI, address ethical considerations, and explore strategies for implementing AI tools in a way that enhances learning outcomes and prepares students for a future where AI plays a central role in various industries. Moreover, these informal gatherings facilitate networking, collaboration, and the sharing of best practices among educational professionals, fostering a community that is well-equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in education.

All sessions run from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

3/5/24  Unveiling AI Breakthroughs: Elevating Learner Support with Insights from CMU

Presenter Ken Koedinger , professor of Human Computer Interaction and Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University.

Dr. Koedinger has an M.S. in Computer Science, a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology, and experience teaching in an urban high school. His multidisciplinary background supports his research goals of understanding human learning and creating educational technologies that increase student achievement

To be sure, "AI" means more than ChatGPT.  My team at CMU has been applying AI in education for over 30 years starting with building some of the earliest "Intelligent Tutoring Systems" that mimic features of good human tutors and have helped millions of students learn math.  A more recent project uses AI vision in a mixed reality system to engage elementary students in learning science by doing science -- you can see this system in action at the Pittsburgh Science museum or at Norilla.org.  Another is using data from middle school math student interactions with an AI Tutoring System to help guide remote undergraduate tutors who "zoom" in to help the students who need it most (see tutors.plus). In all cases, we have done careful research to evaluate and demonstrate that these approaches genuinely increase student learning -- sometimes quite dramatically. Finally, we are using ChatGPT in the last project to help these undergraduate tutors learn effective and engaging teaching strategies, with a particular focus on how they can best motivate middle school math students.  We are interested in extending this work to teachers and welcome the possibility of working with your district!
