PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP - PASA and AASA

Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators members are a powerful network of Pennsylvania’s school leaders dedicated to the success of their school communities and students. PASA members receive a multitude of services, programs, and support to ensure their success as educational leaders. The following information provides an overview of  PASA’s services, expertise, and updates.
Develop your skills and expand your knowledge:
Navigating a consistently evolving climate in public education is a challenge for any leader. PASA’s team of experts—led by our Executive Director, Dr. Sherri Smith and Director of Professional Development, Dr. Michele Balliet—ensure that you have all the tools needed to successfully lead your schools.

PASA is the only state-level organization that provides programs targeted specifically to meet the needs of superintendents and school system leaders –focused on both effective organizational management and leadership. In addition, members receive a special reduced rate for many high-quality programs—another membership plus.  While new professional learning sessions are added throughout the year to address new and upcoming initiatives impacting education within the Commonwealth, our current portfolio of programs include:
  • New Superintendents’ Academy- Phase 1
  • Superintendents Academy - Phase 2
  • New Superintendent Induction Program
  • Superintendent Enhanced Support Program
  • Assistant Superintendent and Central Office Leaders Summit:Embedding Innovations By Managing Change with Dr. Pat Greco
  • Leadership Forum (PASA’s signature conference!)
  • PLUS Caucus Conference
  • Aspiring to Leadership Workshop
  • Women’s Caucus Conference
  • Professional Book Studies

Advocacy:
PASA advocates for the needs of school administrators and their schools—and provides you with the latest legislative updates, analysis and tools needed to talk to your local legislative leaders. Our team works with the PA General Assembly, Department of Education, State Board of Education, and leaders on the national level to influence policy and help to create guidelines that meet the needs of students, their local communities, and school districts.

PASA also organizes an annual advocacy day at the Harrisburg Capitol where we coordinate meetings with legislators and rally support for key legislative initiatives. Learn more about our efforts by joining our Legislative Committee, reading our alerts and weekly updates, or reaching out to Dr. Sherri Smith.
Mentorship:
A mentor coach invests in someone else, offering his/her own experiences, knowledge and skills to guide the participant’s navigation of his/her professional position or aspiration.  Within PASA’s New Superintendent Induction Program, a PASA-trained, seasoned current or former superintendent uses both mentoring and coaching processes to best address the client’s strengths, needs, challenges and/or desired focus and/or results.
Stay in-the-know:
PASA has you covered when it comes to the latest state and national news that relates to education. Our staff constantly monitors the wires to share updates with our members.
  • Education Update: Our weekly Education Update arrives in your inbox each Monday. The E-update curates key news you need to know, provides legislative and policy updates and education-related bill tracking, educational programming updates, and more. New this year: Your PASA membership now includes subscriptions to three major news outlets: EducationWeek, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
  • E-Alerts: When there is a breaking legislative movement that affects public schools, we are keeping you informed with updates directly to your inbox. E-Alerts are often used by PASA as a “call to action” when it is beneficial for you to advocate a position with your local representatives.
  • The Flyer: Our monthly newsletter is filled with useful information and advice to handle the challenging situations you experience each day in your schools. Columns from your colleagues around the Commonwealth and experts on staff at PASA will ensure that you are on the cutting edge of best practices in education.
  • PASAConnect: PASA members can join our community platform where we uplift current events, network with other school leaders across the Commonwealth, provide policy updates, and more.

Legal Support:
PASA’s lawyers, led by General Counsel Robert Tomaine, offer a wide range of employment-related legal services to PASA members who are Commissioned Officers. These services include the negotiation and development of employment contracts;  the negotiation and development of separation agreements; informal dispute resolution (non-litigation) between Commissioned Officers and Boards; and consultation and resources regarding employment issues.

In addition, employment contract assistance is available to PASA members and non-members who are being considered for appointment to their first commissioned position and to experienced administrators who are relocating from another state and moving into a commissioned position in Pennsylvania.

Anyone interested in seeking assistance from PASA’s legal staff should first carefully review the PASA Legal Services Policy to understand the scope of services offered and how to request such assistance by visiting https://www.pasa-net.org/Files/LegalServicesDocs/PASALegalServicesPolicy2015.pdf
Networking:
PASA is committed to providing ongoing opportunities to connect with your colleagues around the Commonwealth—both in districts/schools of similar size and location-type—and as a collective unit. Networking is a great way to exchange ideas, learn new trends, avoid mistakes and make connections that can help you take your schools to the next level. PASA also provides opportunities to meet prospective business partners who are working in the private sector to develop resources and tools to help you and your staff provide the best educational opportunities possible.
Leadership Opportunities:
PASA members can take part in a number of committees, providing leadership at the regional and state levels. Our committees help to shape legislative strategy, advocacy, professional development, and innovative teaching and learning.  Learn more about PASA’s committees.
Career Center:
PASA promotes vacancies in school administration to highlight openings and help districts find the talent they need to effectively operate schools. For more information on posting a job, email Adam Kulikowski at pasa@pasa-net.org.
